*AniMeals No Kill Adoption Center and Animal Food Bank is looking to hire a dynamic self-starter with the skills and passion for the position of Shelter Manager.
This is a staff position in Missoula, MT.
* *Job Title: *Shelter Manager *Pay/Hours: *40 hours/week; generally work four 10-hour days *Salary Range: *$40,000-$45,000/year DOE *Report to: *Executive Director *Summary:* The Shelter Manager is responsible for the daily operations of AniMeals, a feline-centric shelter.
Duties include oversight of internal systems, policies, daily procedures, and supervision of the majority of staff.
This position provides leadership, oversight, and long-range planning to ensure that all areas are operating at the highest standard possible.
*Essential Job Tasks:* **Responsible for hiring, supervising, and training shelter staff.
Monitors safety compliance for staff and volunteers and addresses employee problems and grievances.
Ensures that the shelter is operating within the _Guidelines for Standard of Care in Animal Shelters, _andthat AniMeals is operating within our maximum capacity for care.
Possesses the ability to anticipate populations.
Maintains shelter records and statistics that include animal population, adoption, and veterinarian budget.
Ability to learn PetPoint—a database used to track animal populations and a specific animal’s pathway through the shelter from intake to adoption and sometimes beyond.
Oversees the ordering and inventory of shelter supplies and equipment and assures that appropriate quantities of all supplies are on hand.
Enforces all policies and protocols to protect the health and well-being of the animals in the shelter’s care.
Provide oversight of the intensive care unit and general population floor.
Meets with Executive Director to develop long-range programs and regularly review policies and procedures.
Oversees intakes and adoptions and ensures that the public receives accurate information and excellent customer service.
Assist and provide guidance to other staff as necessary.
Assesses the general health of the shelter animals on a regular basis for signs of stress, illness, injury, aggressive tendencies, and abnormal behaviors.
Conduct weekly population rounds to ensure all medical and behavioral issues are addressed to reduce the length of stay for each animal.
Ensures that animals are cared for daily, including proper feeding, watering, and adequate shelter.
Monitors for signs of injuries and abnormal behavior.
Ensures that all animals are provided a clean, comfortable living environment and facilitates veterinary care and treatment in a timely fashion.
Works cooperatively with veterinary hospitals to ensure all adoptable animals are treated appropriately.
This also includes making appointments, providing safe transportation to and from veterinary clinics, reporting any post-surgery complications to shelter staff, and administering minor first aid.
Develops and maintains positive, professional relationships with the public, staff, veterinary staff, volunteers, and others.
Participates in special projects as needed, including fundraising events, employee development programs, and public education programs.
Identifies animals that need more visibility and create strategies with the marketing specialist.
Oversees the animal food bank distribution.
Offers resources to community members to increase pet retention in the home through safety net programs.
Evaluates new and on-going shelter projects and policies regularly to determine and implement needed changes.
Regularly reviews standard operating procedures to assure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines and facility mission.
Oversees maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment.
Carries out other duties as assigned by Executive Director.
*Additional Duties and Responsibilities:* Working knowledge in the areas of animal health and temperament.
Treat all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and promote these values to others.
Assist with tours, fundraising activities, and special events as needed.
Answer telephone calls from the public in a professional manner and has the ability to direct calls to the proper person or department and initiates follow-ups.
*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* At least two years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or related field and two years of experience managing people.
Working knowledge of basic feline medical care such as common illnesses and disease, treatments, and when to seek medical care.
Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and safety rules.
Interpersonal, organizational and motivational skill as well as the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks at once.
Ability to train and direct staff effectively.
Ability to manage conflicts, disputes, and grievances.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology, medication administration, and medical recordkeeping.
Exceptional work ethic with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and planning skills.
Ability to exercise independent judgment as appropriate and work independently with little supervision.
Ability to promote team work.
Solid oral and written communication skills and a genuine desire to model and facilitate productive communication in the workplace.
Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word or similar programs.
Valid Montana Drivers license with clear driving record for at least one year prior to application.
*Education and Experience:* * Bachelor’s Degree and/or 2 years of relevant experience * Minimum of two years management experience * Experience in an animal shelter and/or veterinary clinic * Demonstrated supervisory knowledge, including motivational techniques and professional development/training methods * Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to helping other reach their full potential * Willingness to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends *Physical Requirements:* * Must be in good health.
Any allergies that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities may be a disqualification.
* Must stand, walk, bend, and stoop frequently to perform duties.
Must also have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
*Working Conditions:* * May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public.
Must be able to deal with an often times emotion-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful.
* By nature of the job, there is occasional exposure to injured, sick, or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
* Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
