Division Overview:
The Forensic Science Division’s (FSD) mission is to provide accurate, objective, and timely forensic analysis in support of the Montana criminal justice community.
The Crime Lab is an internationally accredited lab and home to the State Medical Examiner’s office, where over 800 autopsies a year are performed in Missoula and Billings to determine cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious circumstances.

Job Overview: The Biology Supervisor is a section supervisor and a key member of the top management team.
Helps to ensure that both the laboratory and the forensic section supervised continually meets accreditation standards.
Prepares administrative reports and recommendations on laboratory operations and developments.
Leads effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times and case backlogs, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless customer service.
Prepares recommendations and proposals for the Division Administrator regarding development and implementation of operational policies and procedures for the laboratory and the forensic section.
Participates in audits and assessments as directed by Administrator, as requested by the Quality Assurance Manager, or as required by Division, accreditation, or other requirements.
Participates in the preventive and corrective action processes and monitors follow up and compliance.
Supervisory duties include: Ensures DNA section meets accreditation standards.
Perform administrative functions for forensic facility or section.
Perform management function, including hiring, firing, performance management, discipline, work distribution, and employee development.
Assist with federal grant proposals, management and reporting as it pertains to the biology section.
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biological science, or closely related field.
Successful completion of 12 semester credit hours (or equivalent) of statistics, genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology with a total of 60 semester credit hours (or equivalent) of natural science; at least 9 semester credit hours (or equivalent) must be on the topics of genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
Must have at least 5 years of forensic biology analytical experience in this discipline.
Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.
Preferred Qualifications: Certification by an approved certifying body is preferred.
Leadership/Supervision Experience Master’s degree in natural, forensic, chemistry, biological science, or closely related field.
4 years’ experience as a court-qualified forensic scientist.
Special Instructions: The selection procedures to be used in evaluating the applicant's qualification may include, but are not limited to, an evaluation of the résumé, a structured interview, performance test, academic transcripts, reference/background checks and fingerprint checks.
