Curry Health Center and SARC (Student Advocacy Resource Center) invites applications for a Prevention Specialist to develop , implement, and evaluate prevention programs and activities with a focus on substance use, sexual health, and violence and suicide prevention.
Responsibilities include: Lead, develop, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives that are evidence-based, collaborative and culturally inclusive.
Utilize evidence-based health communication strategies to collaborate on prevention campaigns through a variety of modalities.
Implement strategies that address both the root causes and immediate factors contributing to the identified issues.
Partner with campus departments such as UM Housing to develop training that empowers students to actively engage in violence prevention, sexual health, substance use education and suicide awareness.
Assist in the supervision and active mentoring of Wellbeing Support Coordinators and Peer Health Educators.
Work with SARC to develop and implement ongoing strategy for preventing power-based personal violence (including, but not limited to, sexual assault, relationship violence, family violence, and stalking).
Coordinate prevention efforts focused on sexual and relationship health (such as: consent, safer sex practices and STI (sexually transmitted infection) awareness).
Collaborate with campus and community partners to on the goals enumerated in UM’s OVW (Office on Violence against Women) Campus Grant (from 2022-25).
Develop and implement evidence-based substance use education programs and campaigns.
Conduct educational workshops and training sessions on alcohol, drug and tobacco harm reduction.
Work with counseling staff to design and implement suicide prevention and mental health awareness campaigns.
Offer training in recognizing signs of emotional distress and referring students to counseling services.
Facilitate and coordinate Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education-mandated prevention education training programs.
Required Skills: Knowledge of best practices in substance use prevention, sexual health education, violence prevention and suicide prevention.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
Knowledge of data collection and evaluation methodologies.
Sensitivity to issues related to mental health, diversity and inclusion.
Demonstrated computer proficiency (word processing, Excel, databases, PowerPoint).
Must be able to problem-solve and troubleshoot.
Ability to work independently in a dynamic team environment.
Proven ability to set priorities, effectively manage multiple and simultaneous projects and work with diplomacy and efficiency.
Minimum Required Experience: Bachelor's degree in public health, psychology, social work, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years experience in prevention work, preferably in a college or university setting.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in public health, psychology, social work, or a related field.
Experience working with college students.
3-5 years experience in prevention work.
Prior experience supervising student workers or alternative team supervision.
Strong interest in higher education.
