The Forensic Science Division’s (FSD) mission is to provide accurate, objective, and timely forensic analysis in support of the Montana criminal justice community.
The Crime Lab is an internationally accredited lab and home to the State Medical Examiner’s office, where over 625 autopsies a year are performed in Missoula and Billings to determine cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious circumstances.
Division Overview: The Montana Forensic Science Division (FSD) is an internationally accredited state Forensic Laboratory, processing many varieties of crime scene evidence received from law enforcement agencies across the great state of Montana.
FSD’s mission is to provide accurate, objective, and timely forensic analysis in support of the Montana criminal justice community.
Department of Justice employs more than 35 FSD forensic analysts who complete amazing work such as: identifying mysterious powders or pills, determining quantities of various substances in a person’s body, extracting DNA from a blood stain, matching fired bullets to the gun, or finding fingerprints on ATM machine, to name just a few examples.
The FSD is also home to the State Medical Examiner’s office.
More than 700 autopsies are performed each year in Missoula and Billings to determine cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious circumstances.
The Montana State Crime Lab proudly serves the criminal justice community and the people of Montana.
Job Overview: The Evidence Technician is responsible for evidence management and is the primary person responsible for the security and integrity of evidence when it is received into the crime lab as well as while in their care, custody, or control.
Confidentiality and procedural practices are essential to success in this position.
This person may contribute to standard operating procedure updates; train law enforcement and/or division personnel in evidence packaging and submission standards; and may be required to testify in court.
The person in this position is integral to crime lab operations and may provide support services to specialized Forensic Science Division sections.
This position is within the toxicology section and the successful applicant will be required to work with potentially biohazardous materials (blood, urine, tissue, etc.
) This position may be eligible for a $1.
50 statutory increase on 7/1/2024.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma Two years of job-related work experience to include word processing, proficiency entering data into databases or excel spreadsheets; MS Office™ proficiency Other combinations of experience and an education equivalence may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Law enforcement and / or evidence handling experience Special Instructions: The selection procedures to be used in evaluating the applicant's qualification may include but are not limited to an evaluation of the résumé and cover letter, a structured interview, performance test, academic transcripts, reference/background checks and fingerprint checks.
