The County Attorney's Office is seeking a CRIMINAL ATTORNEY to join their team.
This position will perform the most complex and responsible criminal legal work in the office of the County Attorney, including the prosecution of major and complex criminal violations committed by adults or juveniles, occasional civil responsibilities as assigned.

Representative Examples of Work Reviews criminal investigative files submitted by law enforcement agencies; monitors and assists in additional investigations; prepares proper charging documents for misdemeanor and felony offenses; researches and briefs pretrial motions/ appears in court for all types of hearings; interviews and assists witnesses, prepares trial briefs; tries cases in court.
Participates in sentencing hearings and sentence review hearings; researches and briefs post-conviction motions; researches, briefs and argues supreme court appeals and federal post-conviction proceedings; recommends bail and sentences; meets with opposing counsel.
Responsible for routine policy decisions and development.
While assigned on call duty, assists law enforcement agencies in criminal matters, including providing legal counsel, preparing search warrants, arrest warrants and investigative subpoenas and examining evidence.
Offers occasional assistance to DPHHS personnel and mental health professionals.
Occasionally reviews investigative files submitted by DPHHS personnel and Youth Court, monitors and assists in additional investigations, prepares proper court documents and represents DPHHS and Youth Court at all court hearings; prepares necessary briefs and presents oral arguments.
Directs, supervises and provides training for legal interns and attorneys assigned to criminal prosecution.
Provides leadership and mentoring for legal interns and attorneys.
May provide training for law enforcement, DPHHS, mental health school, probation and parole personnel, schools and community civic groups.
Responsible for criminal calendar assuring that criminal cases are prepared for scheduled hearings and trial.
Makes appearances for other attorneys as requested and when necessary.
Has oversight responsibility for various groups such as Child Protection Team, DUI Task Force, Mental Health Court, etc.
Screens requests for confidential criminal justice information and advises law enforcement agencies regarding the appropriate disclosure and dissemination of information and evidence.
Minimum Qualifications Requires a Juris Doctor degree.
For an Attorney II position, applicants must have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of criminal law.
To qualify as an Attorney III, applicants must have a minimum of four years progressively responsible experience in the practice of criminal law.
To qualify as an Attorney IV, applicants must have a minimum of eight years progressively responsible experience in the practice of criminal law.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be licensed, or eligible to become licensed, to practice law in Montana.
Physical/Environmental Demands The work requires little physical activity and the employee commonly remains in an office setting.
May be exposed to stressful situations.
Requires employee to be on call periodically.
